About

The song “In the Field of Hope” is familiar to Chinese audiences. This song was written in an age of reforms and change. It unveils the China that was on its way to modernity and Chinese people’s vision as well as their attitude towards reality.

Thirty years later, the work In the Field of Hope aims at reflecting contemporary China with the help of the underlying meaning and energy of the song and finding the gap between them in the context of the transformation of ideals and diversity of reality.

When creating this work, the choreographer, Yang Zhen, became more rational. Especially when he pondered over the concept and temperament of this work, he was not as emotional as I had been when creating Just Go Forward. This work is more complicated. For example, what we usually consider as violence is replaced by signs, plays and revels.

In terms of the practical significance of this work, in a candid way it manifests the young generation who is facing a huge gap between reality and vision. A new way to pursue hope and dream is also demonstrated.

In the Field of Hope was created in 2015, and premiered at the Beijing Dance Festival in July 2015. It was later performed at the Guangdong Dance Festival in November 2015, and at the Beijing Nanluoguxiang performing Art Festival in July 2016, and the Shanghai D-dance festival in August 2016 .
